2010-2011 - Mercury Baroque's Historic 10th Season

This season, Mercury Baroque celebrates its 10th anniversary with six special programs of some of music’s greatest masterpieces performed on period instruments. With ten seasons of growth, Mercury has always enjoyed a loyal and enthusiastic following, and to give back to our audience, we’re programming some our all-time favorite works as well as treating you to beautiful lesser-known musical gems. From Handel’s Messiah to Mozart’s Requiem, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to Boccherini’s Fandango, our 10th season is sure to be enjoyed and not to be missed.

Exotique!
October 9, 2010 – 8:00pm – Wortham Center, Cullen Theater
Featuring the music of Rameau and Lully, our season opening program features French orchestral music meant to portray exotic foreign lands for the stage.

Vivaldi’s Montezuma
November 20, 2010 – 8:00pm – Wortham Center, Cullen Theater
First performed in 1733 and lost until its rediscovery in 2002, Montezuma is Vivaldi’s opera based on the story of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire. For its Texan premiere, Mercury Baroque presents a concert version of Vivaldi’s long-lost masterpiece.

Handel’s Messiah
December 10, 11, 2010 – 8:00pm – Wortham Center, Cullen Theater
No holiday season is complete without Handel’s Messiah. This season, Mercury brings you two performances of Handel’s masterpiece – a sing-along version on December 10th, and the rarely performed Dublin version of the Messiah on December 11th.

8 Seasons
February 12, 14, 2011 – 8:00pm – Wortham Center, Cullen Theater
This Valentine’s, join Mercury Baroque for an exciting performance of Vivaldi’s famed Four Seasons and the Four Seasons by Argentinean Tango composer Astor Piazzolla. Recorded by Mercury Baroque in 2003, this program features Violinist Jonathan Godfrey and Denis Plante on Bandoneon.

A Night in Madrid
April 2, 2011 – 8:00pm – Wortham Center, Cullen Theater
Italian by birth, Luigi Boccherini lived most of his working life in Spain, having a heavy influence on his works. This program features his famed Fandango Quintet for Guitar and Strings and his Symphony La Casa del Diavolo.

Mozart’s Requiem
May 14, 2011 – 8:00pm – Wortham Center, Cullen Theater
Mozart’s Requiem is one of music’s greatest masterpieces. Shrouded in mystery, the Requiem has been a source of controversy and debate for decades. Mercury Baroque will give Houston its debut period instrument performance of the Requiem as well as a String Symphony by Mendelssohn.
